“NICE TO MEET YOU, WE ARE GIULIA & ANDREA“
Hi, my name is Giulia Lamarca!
I am 28 years old, I love to travel, I am a psychologist, corporate trainer and travel blogger, I have a passion for sweets.
I am solar, proactive, dreamy and optimistic person. I would call myself a romantic one.
Ah … I forgot, in all this, I had an accident!
A little stubborn, I met Andrea in the strangest period of my life.
Hi, my name is Andrea Decarlini!
I am 29 years old, I am a physiotherapist, I like to travel, to taste any typical dish that I find around the world.
I am calm and peaceful, but constant and determined.
I met Giulia on a hospital bed.
I like being behind the camera and when needed behind the scenes.
I am in a wheelchair.
I had an accident around 8 years ago. I was carried on the back of a motorbike, I don’t really remember the dynamic of the crash; I just know that at one point the bike slipped. I was conscious the whole time but I remember only few things.
I initially thought I broke my foot, as it was the only hurting part. Then the pain reached my back… and I remember the ambulance and the ER.
Well… after the surgery and the anestesia, when I opened my eyes I couldn’t move my legs!
Shortly afterwards they diagnosed an incomplete paraplegia. But the truth, we understand it before the doctor say it, is that… your life changed.
You realise it immediately after opening your eyes… you understand that nothing will be like before.
Hospitalization and life in hospital
On the day of the accident, the 6th of October 2011, I was hospitalized for about 9 months.
So I left my house!
During the hospitalization I found real friends and a new family, 9 months in the hospital are a lot and in the end people really get affections. There are people with whom you have a connected heart and even time will not be able to break the bond you have with them.
During hospitalization you do a lot of physiotherapy, they teach you how to manage and use a wheelchair, and encourage you to live your life as normal as possible.
I owe a lot to people in wheelchairs that I met there, some have become my idols, and seeing them travel, having families, working, has given me courage too.
My future husband…
I met Andrea there, you are wondering who he is!
Well, here Andrea was a student in the 2nd year of physiotherapy, he was doing an internship where I was hospitalized.
At the time, it happened that he was assigned to “my case”!
He says that it was love at first sight; it wasn’t like that for me…
I had recently split up with the boy I had the accident with and honestly I didn’t know how to get my life back in hand. I was quite unstable.
Andrea was my “physiotherapist”, and after the internship he wrote me … I didn’t answer … then he wrote again and I didn’t answer again… until one day a friend of mine gave me tickets for a motocross event but that day he had had an unexpected event, so I was alone … well … I thought of Andrea. I asked him and he said yes! From there, Andrea was my best friend.
We spent a lot of time together and we talked a lot … he told me he was in love and I told him the truth: that I knew nothing about my life.
The phrase that I carry in my heart
He did something that, guys, I still find wonderful to this day.
Well … what to say … he said it and he did it … he was all I needed … and I fell in love with it.
He said to me: “You know, I have a theory: someone must be!”, I said: “What?”, He: “Someone must be and that’s it!”. I understood very well what he meant. He looked me straight in the eye and said, “I will be your “someone must be”, so I will be what you will need, if you need a strong one, I will be strong, if someone has to be your friend, I will be, if you need to scream I will be the one who will listen to you “.
The first year after the accident
The first year was not easy, I didn’t think it was possible that someone could love me in a wheelchair, but he waited and always showed me that it was just like that: he loved me!
Finally one day he gave me an ultimatum, saying to me: “I want you. Now a year has passed. What do you want?”.
I remember as if it were yesterday the day I chose Andrea, it was a Wednesday night, it was raining, and I, while I was in the car, understood that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him.
In short, from then on … things have gone by, travel, moving houses, domestic partnership… but in the end, that day really arrived!
“Giulia Lamarca, will you marry me?”
And so it happened: in Paris, in an airport, during a trip, a marriage proposal with a breathtaking ring.
OUR TRAVEL
WHY A TRAVEL BLOG?
Traveling in a wheelchair is sometimes (most of them…) complicated.
But I truly believe that with a good amount of DETERMINATION (hothead) and BOLDNESS (rage) you can do it!
Unfortunately not everybody is born with these characteristics, that’s why my blog can come in handy.
…my passion and need for traveling came up just after the accident.
Now traveling means for me FREEDOM, it’s my way of WALKING into the world as if I was on my legs. It allows me to leave the past behind and reinvent myself every time.
People don’t know who I was and simply see who I am now!
